Sounds exciting?
A swimming pool in your garden is an extraordinary thing to have.
Now that you've decided to build a swimming pool in your garden, there are a lot of questions to answer.
Factors influencing pool construction time
One of the most frequently asked questions we receive from people planning to build and install a swimming pool at home is: "How long will it take to build the pool? " Building a pool from scratch is not a job that can be done overnight. There are a number of things to consider when planning to build a pool, and the time required for each step varies and depends on various factors.
The professionals at Natural Pools make pool installation a breeze for our customers. We have experts who make the job quick and efficient, while ensuring that the quality of the work is of the highest standard.
As already mentioned, the time required to build a swimming pool depends on a number of factors. These include, but are not limited to:
- The planning process
- The type of pool you have chosen
- Authorization from the competent local authority
- The time of year
- Other contractors
Let's see how these factors influence the time needed to build your pool. These factors apply to residential poolsbut most of them are also common to commercial pools.
Planning process
Planning the construction of a swimming pool
Planning the construction of your pool can be a lengthy process. A pool is a major investment, and you want to get it right the first time. So it's important to take the time to plan. Many decisions need to be made during the planning process. From pool type and size to color and location, you'll need to decide everything before you start the pool-building process. It's the same as the time and effort needed to decide on important aspects when building a new home. If you're building your pool in your new home, you'll need to determine whether the landscaping should be done before or after the pool is built. Similarly, other elements such as pool fencing and tiling must also be taken into account.
You should also have a specific budget in mind before embarking on building a pool in your home. You can discuss this budget with your pool contractors to find out how much you can get within it, and whether or not you'll need to add more.
To cut a long story short, here are some of the important questions you should ask yourself and those around you before embarking on the pool-building process:
- Pool type
- Pool shape
- Pool size
- Pool color
- Pool location
- Pool features (do you want your pool to have pool is smart ?)
- Should the pool be installed before or after the construction of a new house?
- Should landscaping be done before or after pool installation?
- The right pool enclosure for you
- Budget
One of the main factors influencing the time it takes to build a pool in your home is the planning phase. This is the time to decide on your preferences so that the pool-building process can run smoothly. For some people, the pool planning process is relatively quick, while others may take months to decide on these factors, especially when it comes to a more complex pool.
The fact is, once you've built a pool in the ground, it will stay there forever. So it's only natural to take your time before deciding on the shape you want your pool to take.
The type of pool you choose
Another major factor determining the timing of your pool project is the type of pool you have chosen for your home. There is a difference between the time it takes to build a concrete pool and a fiberglass pool. So, when you're planning to build a swimming pool in your home, it's important to decide beforehand what type of pool you want.
If you opt for a pre-molded fiberglass pool that comes with a pre-constructed pool shell, you'll save time. Installation of a fiberglass pool generally takes 2 to 4 weeks, while it can have water about two days after installation.
Building a concrete pool, on the other hand, takes longer. From the start of the work (excavation), it takes around 14 weeks to complete the installation. You can find an overview of the project timetable here. Concrete pools have the advantage of not being limited by size or shape. If you're looking for a pool with a complex shape and larger size, you should opt for a concrete pool. These pools do, however, take longer to build. Thinking of an in-ground spa attached to the pool? It also takes a little longer to build.
Pool installation is just one step in the pool project. While the construction of a fiberglass or concrete pool may take only a few weeks, it usually takes 3 to 6 months for households to feel satisfied with the landscaping and other elements. So, pool finishes depend on your eye for detail and the amount of time and money you're willing to devote to your pool project.
The time of year
As the weather warms up, more and more people are starting to think about installing swimming pools in their homes. It's during the summer months that we're inundated with inquiries about pool construction, from people who want to swim in their pools as soon as possible. If you want to enjoy a long summer in your pool, the best time to talk to your pool builder is June/July or even earlier. On the other hand, if you want to opt for a more economical solution, you can wait until winter, as most retailers offer incentives during this period to fill their winterizing period. Even if you decide to start the process in January or February, you can have the pool ready for summer if you're able to complete the landscaping in time.
Local consent authority
You need permission from the local authority to build a swimming pool. It's important to submit your application as soon as the planning procedure has been completed. In most cases, this will be done by your pool builder. The application should contain full details of the construction process, as well as an outline of how you intend to comply with all safety standards.
The time it takes to process your building permit application depends on the application and varies from city to city. Bear in mind that it takes between 4 and 6 weeks to obtain the permit before you can start building your pool. The lead time is longer during the summer, when pool construction is particularly busy.
Don't forget that you can't start building a pool until the local authorities have given you the go-ahead to do so. So the sooner you send your application to the authorities, the less time it will take to complete the pool project on time.
Other contractors
Building a swimming pool is a major project. It will require the intervention of several contractors, from the concrete worker to the electrician, from the pavers to the fitters, and many others. The availability and efficiency of one contractor can therefore have an impact on the time it takes other contractors to complete the job. In most cases, you'll receive a list of preferred contractors when you hire a professional pool contractor like Natural Pools.
As already mentioned, one contractor can influence the work of other contractors. Some elements of the pool construction and installation process depend on the other contractor completing his part of the pool project. For example, you can't start the pumps if the electrician hasn't established the power supply to the switches. So it's a good idea to plan your pool project carefully, so you don't end up in the middle of the road. You can reduce the risk of your pool project being delayed if you establish a schedule for each contractor in advance. Each contractor will come in to work on his part of the job before the other contractors can come in and start their work.
The secret to a successful pool construction project is planning and finding the right professionals to do the job. If you're looking for the best pool option that offers unlimited flexibility, our concrete pools are the best choice. With us, you'll be able to complete your pool project (standard installation) in the shortest possible time, and we'll take care of all the project management and work organization.
Overview of pool installation project schedule
Now that you know the various factors that influence the timing of a pool installation, let's take a look at a typical concrete pool project by Natural Pools.
We allow 6 months to build the pool, from signing the documents to delivery. The permit process can take from 8 weeks to 3 months. Unfortunately, this is not a timeframe over which we have much control, as it is site- and project-specific and we have to act according to the building expert's guidelines.
Once we've obtained the permit, we'll dig the pool within 14 days (which gives us time to book the excavators, etc.). Once the pool has been dug, we'll have the concrete shell built within a further 14 days. We then have to wait 30 days for the concrete to harden. This is often the ideal time for customers to carry out other work, such as landscaping or building a terrace.
Once the concrete has hardened, we coat and tile the pool shell, then install the pool equipment and any heating options (solar or gas). If the pool is being built as part of a home renovation or construction project, we generally build the pool shell before the house slab is poured or renovation work begins, to ensure maximum access. Most of the time, the pool is located in the backyard, which makes it difficult for us to access it when other work begins. Once the pool shell is complete, we wait until the renovation or construction work on the house is almost finished. We then lay the tiles and install the pool equipment. In this way, we protect the customer's property from any incidents that may occur on site during other construction work.
Although this method slows down pool construction (because we're then dependent on the schedule of the customer's house builder), it guarantees the customer a much higher-quality product.
Pool installation times at a glance

- Excavation: 1-3 days but requires a 14-day lead time
