Romain Gary's novel made into a movie.
"The Promise of Dawn is Romain Gary's autobiographical novel. The writer recalls his youth in Poland and then in France. After earning a law degree, Romain became an officer cadet at the Ecole de l'Air in Salon-de-Provence in 1938. World War II saw him join the Free French Air Force (FAFL), flying Douglas A-20 Boston jets on 25 missions from Great Britain and North Africa. After the Liberation, the war hero became an acclaimed writer and "the only novelist to have won the Prix Goncourt twice, under two pseudonyms.
The novel has already been the subject of a first film, shot in 1970 by Jules Dassin. The new film, directed by Eric Barbier, will hit cinemas this Wednesday, December 20. The cast of this new adaptation includes Pierre Niney as Romain Gary, Charlotte Gainsbourg as the writer's mother, and Jean-Pierre Darroussin.

For the aerial scenes, on the initiative of technical advisor and aeronautical coordinator Isabelle Bazin, several Dassault Flamants from Alençon and Corbas were used to represent the Boston bombers of the Lorraine group (aka RAF Sq. 342), as well as several SV-4 Stampe, Piper Cub, Stinson L-5 and Stearman.
Shooting of the aeronautical part took place, among other places, in July 2016 in Belgium, on the former Brustem base, 70 km east of Brussels - the terrain featuring the English base of Hatford Bridge in the film. Prior to this, two weeks were spent at the Goetsenhoven airfield, depicting Salon-de-Provence. Of note, Isabelle Bazin and artistic director Pierre Renson have been nominated for a César award for "best set design". ♦♦♦
