The race for pixels affects a wide range of fields. Televisions, smartphones, tablets, giant displays - there isn't a single sector where the definition of our devices has stopped growing. HD, Full HD, 4K, every screen definition has its own name, to better identify it and make it more explicit to the general public.

4K is the latest development in the TV sector. Capable of displaying 4 times more pixels than an ordinary Full HD screen, 4K TVs are proliferating on the market. But behind the various promises made by manufacturers.., really display higher-quality images? Are they really worth it, and is the extra cost compared with simple Full HD TVs justified?
To best answer this question, we need to distinguish between two very different situations. In the first, the TV receives a 4K video stream (generally via HDMI), and displays it directly on the screen without any processing. The TV therefore displays 4 times as many pixels as a Full HD television. and the details are far more extensive. The image therefore looks much sharper and more pleasing to the eye.
In the second case, the TV receives a 1080p video stream, and displays it, this time processing it using various controllers. It performs what is more commonly known as "upscaling", adapting the image definition to that of the TV. However, in this situation, a 4K TV will display as much detail as its Full HD counterpart and image sharpness should, for equivalent screen diagonals, be fairly similar on both devices.
How does this happen? The TV has, in effect, zoomed in on the image, filling it in with more pixels. For example, on two TV sets of the same size, the one displaying 4K will have pixels 4 times smaller than the Full HD model. In order to display a Full HD stream, the latter will not perform any processing, and the former will not. will transform each pixel of the stream into a set of 4 pixels on the screen. This will enable it to fill its entire slab, maintaining the original image format, but without exploiting all its capacities.
This operation also exists in the other direction, with "downscaling" enabling an image with a higher definition to be displayed on the TV set. This operation is much rarer, however, but in this case.., the TV combines several pixels of the original image into a single pixel on its panel, reducing the level of detail.
Ultimately, any 4K screen (we've taken the example of televisions here, but this also applies to all devices equipped with such screens) will only reveal its true quality with 4K content, which is still in very short supply. The majority of current content is, at best, in Full HD or, at worst, in HD, a 4K display is still largely unexploited at present but may well prove useful in the years to come, as more and more 4K content becomes available.
